Retired Lt.-Gen. Michel Maisonneuve made headlines last year for a speech criticizing everything from Canada’s political correctness, climate change policies to weak leaders when he accepted the prestigious Vimy Award.OTTAWA – Retired Lt.-Gen. Michel Maisonneuve and his wife, retired Maj. Barbara Maisonneuve, are once again hoping for a standing ovation when they take the stage during the Conservative party convention in Quebec City on Thursday night.
“The virtue signalling, the apologizing, destroying history, dividing Canadians instead of uniting them, those are the sorts of things that we feel are going on today. Moving forward, those things need to be changed, and we need to unite Canada under one strong government,” said Barbara Maisonneuve. “I was expressing my personal views. They were not partisan views. Those were views of a Canadian, criticizing my government, criticizing maybe my society, but they were my views,” he said.
Months later, the party asked the Maisonneuves to be guest speakers at the convention. They’ll pick up on some of the themes that were discussed in November’s speech and declare their trust and faith in Poilievre to “bring back hope … for all Canadians.” Former Defence Minister Peter MacKay and one of the founders of Britain’s Vote Leave Campaign, Lord Daniel Hannan, are also featured as guest speakers. And on Friday evening, Poilievre will deliver his most important speech since he was elected leader.
