This year, divert waste from the landfill by donating your Halloween pumpkins to adorable farm animals.
Every year, after the candy is gone and the cobwebs are taken down, more than 1 billion pounds of pumpkins used forAlthough pumpkins can be consumed by humans and animals, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates the majority of the usable pumpkins produced in the United States are grown for decoration and wind up being trashed shortly after the holiday.
Visitors can drop off uncarved and undecorated pumpkins of any size at the zoo entrance booth daily during zoo hours, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Community members can drop off pumpkins 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. every day of the week. In late-November, Mount Laurel Animal Hospital hosts events where members of the public can sign up for a time slot to feed donated pumpkins to the farm animals. The farm “gladly accepts people’s old pumpkins,” said owner Kim Weigman. Even pumpkins that have started to rot can be tossed on the compost pile. In the spring, the pumpkin remnants start to sprout leaves that can be fed to the animals, said Weigman.
