River is under stress because of drought and resulting low water levels.

The Cowichan River’s most ardent advocate is dismayed that the province failed to close the Upper Cowichan River to fishing through the winter to protect spawning fish stocks trying to survive this year’s drought.

He had been calling on the province to close the upper portion of the river to fishing from Sept. 1 to April 1. The river is currently closed to fishing. The economics of angling and providing opportunities to fish should take second place to the health of the stocks, he said.“This is such a no-brainer to close it until April so all of the fish have a chance to spawn.”A mass die off in July of fry to adult fish brought in senior governments to study river conditions. The total mortality rate is not known because scavengers quickly take care of any dead fish, Saysell said.
