Los Angeles Angels two-way players Shohei Ohtani tore his UCL on Aug. 23.
“Is he going to pitch the rest of the year? No. We already know that. Is he going to get into next year? We don’t know yet. So just bear with me on that. But I do know this -- no matter what timetable we’re dealing with and when we get this done, Shohei’s going to be in somebody’s lineup next year, DHing when the bell rings. We know that. We’re not going to push that. He’s going to be good to go.”
Ohtani exited his Aug. 23 start against the Reds after 1 1/3 innings and the Angels announced that he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He last tore his UCL in 2018 and required Tommy John surgery. He only hit during the 2019 season. As a pitcher this year, the 29-year-old posted a 3.14 ERA with 167 strikeouts in 132 innings pitched over 23 starts. As a hitter, he’s slashing .302/.412/.654 with 44 homers.with right oblique tightness and is set to undergo further testing Tuesday morning.
