Brandon Drury’s sacrifice fly scored Brett Phillips to complete a two-run ninth inning against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase, giving the Angels a 5-4 victory over the Guardians at Progressive Field.
Mike Trout led off the ninth with a double and came home on Hunter Renfroe’s grounder to second to tie the score. The ball was hit squarely to Andres Gimenez, who had a good chance to throw out Trout but flung the ball past catcher Cam Gallagher. The Angels earlier squandered a pair of golden opportunities, failing to score after loading the bases with none out in the fifth and not advancing Trout and Ohtani after they began the seventh with walks off James Karinchak.
