It's easy to forget that set-top media players are part of the Internet of Things. And like a lot of other IoT devices, they're often riddled with security holes
from at least three brands: Cubetek, HiSilicon, and QezyMedia. They're under fire because the boxes ship with the Android Debugging Bridge enabled.
Some of the devices WootCloud analyzed did require a password to enable ADB access. The cybercriminals behind the Ares malware planned for that, however. They built in a brute-forcing component that will attempt to log in with a list of known passwords. If that device happens to connect to a new network -- say, perhaps, if the owner took it over to a friend's house to watch movies -- Ares looks for other devices that will accept its ADB connections. In this situation it doesn't matter whether or not port 5555 is blocked because the infected system is already inside the network.
