A rich coastal culture can now claim its multiracial roots.

Each prince founded a town across this stretch of land known as the Swahili Coast. Today, people who identify as Swahili view this legend as an origin story that explains their diverse heritage.

In regards to understanding exactly how Swahili culture was formed, “they are a people without a history,” says, a professor of anthropology at the University of South Florida and senior author of the study. “We have partially resolved the issue of who were the ancestors of the Swahili people and who built this great African civilization.”

In the 11th century, the island of Kilwa Kisiwani was sold to a Persian trader Ali bin Al-Hasan, who founded the Swahili city of Kilwa. Over the next few centuries, Kilwa grew to be a major city and trading centre along that coast, and also inland as far as Zimbabwe. Trade was mainly in gold and iron from Zimbabwe, ivory from Tanzania, and textiles, jewelry, porcelain, and spices from Asia.
