A fossil unearthed in north-east Thailand in 2005 belongs to a previously unknown short-snouted alligator species that may have lived until a few thousand years ago
Alligator munensis
after the nearby Mun River. Fossils of nearby species suggest the short-snouted alligator could have lived up to 200,000 years ago, or as recently as a few thousand years ago. There are no clues yet as to why the alligator went extinct.shares traits with the Chinese alligator, such as a ridged skull and small opening on the roof of its mouth, the authors speculate that the two may have shared a common ancestor. The rising Tibetan plateau may have severed their populations millions of years ago.
