Rhyah Stewart of Antigonish is making history this week, becoming the first female player to attend the Cape Breton Eagles training camp. The 16-year-old arrived at camp on Tuesday night and was on the ice for practice on Wednesday and Thursday. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST.SYDNEY, N.S. – Making history on male-dominated teams is nothing new for Rhyah Stewart.

Following the league’s entry draft in June, Stewart received a phone call from Eagles general manager Sylvain Couturier who invited her to attend the Eagles training camp this month. The five-foot-eight, 130-pound Stewart joined the Eagles training camp on Tuesday night after spending time with Canada’s national under-18 program for a three-game series against the United States in New York last week.

“We always talk about inclusion in today’s game and we just want the best athletes – boy or girl – it doesn’t matter. We’re excited to have her on the ice with us.”“Everyone is rooting for her and I think it’s great,” said Robitaille. “It was like a big weight off my shoulders through the whole tryout process. Once it was done and I was told that I made the team, it was really cool.”

In March, Stewart backstopped Nova Scotia to its first-ever silver medal performance at the Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown.
