Among Bay Area Republicans likely to vote in the March presidential primary, 51% support Trump, despite the former president being found guilty of sexual abuse earlier this month.
In California, 44% of Republicans likely to vote in next year’s March presidential primary support Donald Trump, according to a new poll from the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies.
While support for DeSantis, who after months of speculation formally started his campaign last week with a botched Twitter announcement, has plummeted, the governor and Trump are the two candidates to beat. No other Republican got more than 4% support, according to the poll. The poll was conducted online in English and Spanish between May 17-22, and has a sampling error of approximately +/-2 percentage points.
The swell of support for the former president comes despite multiple investigations in the last few months into Trump’s actions, including a recent New York trial that found the former president guilty of sexual abuse. Though nearly 70% of the country feels that verdict should be treated seriously, two-thirds of Republicans in California “discount the seriousness of the verdict,” according to the poll.
