Canadian Papineau one shot back
Calm and unruffled, George Kneiser retained his lead into the second round Friday of the Royal Beach Victoria Open presented by the Times Colonist, the first event of the 10-tournament 2023 PGA Tour Canada season.
Meanwhile, if Étienne Papineau suffered any effects from his cross-country trek, from playing in the RBC Canadian Open last week in Toronto to swinging at Uplands Golf Club this week, he wasn’t showing it. The native of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., was one shot back at 11-under 129 after rounds of 64 Thursday and 65 Friday to join Chris Korte out of the University of Denver Pioneers in a tie for second place.
“I was in a locker-room last week with some of the best players in the world and watched how they acted,” said Papineau, the 2015 Quebec amateur champion, who played NCAA Div. 1 at West Virginia University for the Mountaineers. “These players here are not that far off, to be honest. Most PGA Tour players have come through the PGA Tour Canada or PGA Tour Latin America [which will merge next year]. It’s great to be a part of this.”“In the developmental pro golf level, you always feel like your back is against the wall,” said Uplands leader Kneiser.“My ball striking has been solid and I am parring my putts,” said the native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, who is a huge fan of his home-state Green Bay Packers.
