'Allyship in action': Advocate says proposed bylaw will help protect 2SLGBTQIA+ Calgarians yyc
Right now are focussed on gender and sexually-diverse Calgarians, perhaps tomorrow they are fixated on Jewish Calgarians, Indigenous persons, persons of colour, so this bylaw is not just about protecting 2SLGBTQIA+ Calgarians but really about ensuring that we put parameters in place so that no other protected group will have to face ongoing demonstrations of hate in their neighbourhood,” Murphy said.
“There is a much bigger need for us to have a conversation about how we might then strengthen the criminal code of Canada to better embolden and empower law enforcement because as of right now it is so vague and unclear, and does in some ways allow for salacious ideologies or false-hearted information to be weaponized and leveraged into a defence for hate,” she said.
“The community is exhausted and terrified and so Calgary as a city needs to really stand unwaveringly united in order to bring meaningful, tangible and sustainable change to reality,” she said.
