All American prisoners have been promised coronavirus surgical masks. The masks are being delivered by a diverse array of organizations and individuals, including a nonprofit for the blind, billionaire rapper Jay-Z and prisoner labor

The Lighthouse for the Blind, a nonprofit whose remit is to help visually-impaired people and those with blindness and other disabilities obtain work and skills, has been brought in to assist with the effort. It has scored a $1.26 million contract with the BOP to provide N95 masks for the COVID-19 outbreak, according to public federal government contract records. The masks were ordered by Victorville prison in San Bernardino, California.
Whilst a nonprofit for the blind might seem like a strange source for COVID-19 personal protection equipment . But the organization has a long history of manufacturing work for the U.S. government, ranging from clothing for the Department of Defense to medical supplies for the U.S. Army. More than 260 of its 470 employees are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities, working across the company, whether in military base stores or factories.
The Reform Alliance has also been calling on the U.S. government to release “non-dangerous people,” from the elderly and medically vulnerable to those imprisoned for minor crimes, in order to save lives. According to a this week, the man who became first coronavirus-linked death in a New York prison was incarcerated on a technicality for breaking parole.is more explicit on how it believes the Trump administration is dealing with the COVID-19 problem across U.S. prisons: “COVID-19 spreads most quickly in crowded and closed environments, and our jails and prisons are at high risk for an outbreak. This is a huge threat to public health.
