After an abnormally dark and dreary winter this year where parts of Ontario were deprived of the most amount of direct sunlight in more than 80 years,Toronto’s public beaches will be finally open for safe swimming starting June to September.

starting in June. Every year, the city’s Parks, Forestry & Recreation division collects daily water samples from supervised public beaches. Toronto Public Health then measures E.coli levels to determine the water quality for public swimming.The city adopted a new tool in 2022 to forecast water quality in Marie Curtis and Sunnyside beaches through artificial intelligence predictive modelling .

Star reported that questions arose around its accuracy after waters that tested high for E. coli using traditional means were marked safe by the new system dozens of timesIsabel Fleisher, who works for water advocacy group Swim Drink Fish which publishes swim guides informing people when and where it’s safe to take a dip based on public health data, told the Star in 2022 she grew concerned looking at testing records for Sunnyside and Marie Curtis.
