UPDATE | Duval County Public Schools now says all schools and activities will be canceled beginning Wednesday.
. The decision was made after Mayor Lenny Curry announced the city is considering potential evacuations in Zone A. Athletic activities and extracurricular activities are canceled until Oct. 3. The district will remain closed Thursday and Friday and all activities are canceled., schools and district offices will be closed Wednesday through Friday. After-school activities and athletics will continue as normal on Tuesday.Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
“Many factors are considered when opening a shelter, so even if our community experiences minimal physical effects from the storm, our district plays an important role in the response from the EOC,” Putnam Schools wrote on its website.
″I wouldn’t be surprised if some schools say, we are not going to have Thursday’s session, maybe Wednesday, because Wednesday will be a deteriorating day. And then you’ll have to watch the rain, and if you see the rain gauges at two inches, three inches, four inches, I would plan on maybe the kids staying home another day because those routes will be impassable,” News4JAX meteorologist Richard Nunn said.
″The roads are usually dome-shaped to allow for runoff so when it rains and the water runs to the lower area, as the water channels off, sometimes it takes the dirt with it, and then those channels get wider, so instead of a rut, you could have a washout,” Nunn said.
