Renowned as the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock began his career as a filmmaker in his native England before becoming a Hollywood director.
One of Hitchcock's most beloved films and one of the most acclaimed horror movies of all time, Psycho is based on Robert Bloch's 1959 novel of the same name. In addition to Hitchcock effectively creating modern spoiler warnings with the film's cryptic marketing campaign, Psycho is famous for pushing the boundaries of violence and sexual content well beyond early '60s norms. In doing so, Psycho also set a record that is both bizarre and hilarious.
Although toilets were previously visible in the background of early Hollywood films from the silent era, and Hitchcock himself had made other films featuring toilets back in England, the focus on the toilet so prominently in the frame here was radical. It was also a significant moment.
Psycho still would have to tow a very fine line to be approved by Hollywood censorship at the time, toning down the movie's violence from the levels seen in Bloch's novel — in which Marion is decapitated in the shower. Still, Psycho would still be a game-changer that would help eventually lead to the production code's dissolution later that decade.
