Here's how Alexander McQueen's unforgettable spring 1999 show is helping one Vogue editor stay positive.

Uncertainty is a feeling I’ve grown too familiar with during this strange time of coronavirus. If I’ve learned anything from these past few weeks, it is to expect the unexpected. I’ve also made use of the opportunity for reflection.

Quarantine gives us more time to think, face fears, find inspiration, and just plain old rest. I have finally found the time to dust off those books that I swore I would get to and watch those films that have been queued up for far too long. And, as the days pass by, I find myself thinking about what has moved me most, flipping through my mental fashion rolodex, which includes John Galliano’s Dior debut and Rick Owens’scollection.

Scrolling through show after show on Vogue Runway, I find myself coming back to one in particular: Alexander McQueen’s iconicshow. The finale, with Shalom Harlow standing in a white dress on a rotating platform being sprayed with paint, is like the ending to my wildest dreams. Rewatching it today, it seems like those robots are painting a chaotic, but somehow poetic, vision of our current times.

Internally, I’ve been debating if I feel more like Shalom, under attack; or like the audience, who were given the opportunity to feel something and react. Maybe I’m somewhere in between? Sitting in my grandmother’s peaceful yet somber garden, I came to the decision that I was content with not having an answer. It’s enough to accept that the future is unknowable.
