Supermarket wars!
An Aldi supermarket could be built just yards away from a Lidl store under plans set to be approved by Fylde Borough Council.
Fylde’s planning committee will consider the proposals at a meeting next week and a council officer’s report recommends granting permission. If that does happen, Aldi aims to have the store open in around 18 months.Plans for the development were submitted in July 2022 after a period of consultation and will see Aldi add yet another store to its rapidly growing portfolio. It also includes the building of a storage facility designed to be used by small businesses and individual traders.
If all goes ahead, the new store will be 1,880sqm in size with 105 parks spaces, including four electric charge units. The storage business will offer 80 “small scale storage/warehouse units” with an average size of 26.75sqm. Aldi says up to 50 job will be created once construction is complete and that it will have “no implications for the retailer’s ongoing operation in St Annes town centre” as this is considered to serve a different catchment area.
