The ministry’s Budget 2023 performance metrics includes reducing the lead time to trial for serious and violent matters at the provincial court to 24 weeks, a decrease of nearly three weeks from 2021-22. “It’s more efficient in terms of streamlining the process and getting rid of weaker cases at an earlier stage,” Penney said.Outside of those provinces, including currently in Alberta, police generally make independent decisions on whether or not to lay charges.
