Two others with cabinet experience under Jason Kenney, Prasad Panda and Josephine Pon, also were voted out on Monday as was former minister Whitney Issik, who lost by 30 votes in Calgary-Glenmore pending a recount. Travis Toews, the only person to serve as permanent finance minister under the UCP, and former energy and environment minister Sonya Savage both chose not to run.
All of those losses leave Smith with dilemmas around representation in selecting her next executive council, according to Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt. “During the election … I could write down an NDP cabinet right now on a blank piece of paper with about 90 per cent accuracy. I said I could not do it for the UCP because not only did Toews and Savage not run again, I knew that senior ministers were going to go down,” he said.
