As Alberta heads into the home-stretch of the election, Danielle Smith and Rachel Notley are set to face off in a televised debate Thursday at 6 p.m. local, 8 p.m. eastern.
, questions about both parties’ records while in office and even multiple out-of-control wildfires.
Topics likely to come up include election mainstays like health care, education and the rising cost of living, but also questions about some of Smith’s past comments, Notley’s time in office and the response to the dozens of fires currently blanketing the province in smoke. A former leader of the right-wing Wildrose Party and talk show host, Smith came out on top after a tumultuous race to lead the party last fall. Generally considered further to the right than Kenney, her initial support was fuelled by pandemic angst, as she publicly questioned public health protections and vaccine safety.
Notley, meanwhile, was elected premier back in 2015 as the province’s first NDP leader in the traditionally right-leaning province. Her party’s surprise victory was dubbed the Orange Crush. It didn’t last, however, and it was defeated by Kenney and his newly united party in the next election.
