Alberta affordability minister to tweak power pricing options as rates continue to rise ableg abpoli
, Premier Danielle Smith directs Affordability and Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf to figure out how to fix electricity contracts that see consumers pay a rate for power that changes monthly based on the market price.Neudorf is asked to try to address a range of high costs, from food and housing to auto insurance rates, including “exploring the potential phase out of the regulated rate option” to protect consumers from spikes in utility costs.
He told Postmedia the government wants those who prefer the RRO to have the choice, but vulnerable Albertans need to have access to more alternatives that aren’t as volatile. “We will be making changes to the RRO, it will likely be renamed, it will likely be more limited on who is taking part in it,” he said.
Currently, it’s the default for consumers who don’t sign on with a competitive retailer, and it’s often used by those who have barriers like poor credit scores. Smith has previously signalled she wanted to offer price stability for those most affected by price fluctuations. “The people who end up getting hit the most are fixed-income seniors, they’re people who are renters, they’re people who are newcomers, and that’s just not right. We’ve got to do something more to make sure they have a lot more price stability,” SmithSign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
