Applications for state disaster assistance have opened for residents of several Alaska communities damaged by recent ice jam flooding.

Manley residents are among those in numerous communities now eligible for state assistance. in Western Alaska and the Interior resulted in dozens of homes and businesses sustaining significant damage, authorities estimated this week, as spring breakup subsided and left behind a trail of destruction.

Another nine homes experienced varying levels of damage, and more damage could still be discovered as recovery continues, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.The Red Cross provided immediate assistance to 10 families in the community, Williams said. Many of the homes with significant damage are cabins or second homes, he said, but several families may continue to need temporary housing during ongoing repairs.

Rising water flooded the fire department and at least one other business, he said. There were also reports of basement flooding and some damage to homes.
