Troy University was the most popular four-year college in Alabama among undergrads from 15 Alabama counties. See the most popular choice in each county.
, in Pike County, south of Montgomery, leads the way as the most popular choice for 15 of Alabama’s 67 counties. The next closest school, Jacksonville State University in Calhoun County, was the most popular choice for 10 counties.
Troy University dominates in the Wiregrass, the region in southeast Alabama anchored by Dothan. Each of the 15 counties which sent the most students to Troy is in or around that region.JSU saw strong enrollment from the 10 closest counties to Calhoun, in northeast Alabama. The University of Alabama was the most popular in eight counties, the third most in the state, most of them in a chunk bordering Tuscaloosa, UA’s home county.
Interestingly, the school with the highest total in-state undergraduate enrollment - Auburn University - was the most popular choice for just three counties, all in a cluster around The Plains. It made up its numbers by being the second most popular college choice in 23 counties, the most of any school.

For instance, the University of Alabama picked up two new counties, Perry and Wilcox. Alabama State University, which in 2020 was the most popular choice in two counties - Perry and Macon - fell completely off the map in 2021.
And even Troy University, still the most popular school among the highest number of Alabama counties, lost a county, dropping from the favorite in 16 counties in 2020 to 15 in 2021.
