According to Kawasaki, the bill came about due to public feedback about heavy vehicles on Interior roads, particularly Manh Choh ore haul trucks.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A bill in the Alaska Senate is aiming to restrict the weight of vehicles on Alaskan highways. It would require a special permit for any vehicles that weigh more than 140,000 pounds to travel on highways managed by the State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities .

These vehicles, when full of ore, weigh around 165,000 pounds. “We know that it’s going to cost a lot in additional road maintenance money in order for these large trucks to be traversing the AlCan and then up to Fairbanks, and so it was my opinion that we needed a way in order to obtain revenues, in this particular case through a permit system,” Kawasaki said.

“Mostly these vehicles, larger vehicles, weigh a lot and do a lot of road damage, and so I just think it’s fair that they’re part of the solution when it comes to maintaining the roads in Fairbanks,’ he added. Kawasaki acknowledged the bill could impact more than just Manh Choh’s vehicles, and says he’s in conversation with the DOT about making exceptions for certain commodities with food and fuel.At that time, it was referred to two Senate committees: the Transportation Committee and the Labor and Commerce Committee.
