Airbnb has signed a sponsorship deal reportedly worth $500 million with the International Olympic Committee ahead of its planned IPO in 2020
During the the Rugby World Cup, the company said it hosted 650,000 people in Japan, although it did not specify how many of these were visiting the country for the sporting event.In the five host locations of upcoming Olympic events, the company expects to add “hundreds of thousands of new hosts,” but an Airbnb spokesperson could not provide a more specific estimate, not even for Tokyo.
—setting a goal for 100% verified accommodations by December 2020—Airbnb will also be introducing a “guest guarantee” in the coming months in an attempt to tackle the issue of hosts canceling reservations.Similarly vague was another initiative announced as a result of the IOC partnership, also set to launch in early 2020: Airbnb Olympian Experiences, which will see Olympic athletes hosting experiences for Airbnb users interested in physical activity and the life of an elite sportsperson.
