Humble ISD voters overwhelmingly approve $775 million bonds
Humble ISD V.O.T.E. members join Asdrubal"Dru" Gutierrez, Sr., chair of the organization, to celebrate the win for Humble ISD with the passage of the $775 million in two bonds.Despite record heat temperatures and a busy Mother’s Day weekend, more than 12,000 registered voters in Humble ISD turned out in early voting and on Saturday, May 7 to overwhelmingly support two bond proposals by a 2 to 1 vote.
After early vote totals were released, Prop A held a 2,233-vote lead and Prop B held a similar lead with 2,254 that included early voting and ballots by mail. Also included in initial projects will be a permanent location for Mosaic, a special education program for students ages 18 to 22. The program is currently housed in temporary buildings. The building will include offices on site for staff members who support special education students throughout the district with specialized services.
“It wasn’t easy,” he described the process. “There were certainly a lot of needs that were presented to us by the district.”“We went from discussing flower beds to multimillion-dollar buildings. We identified the projects we felt would keep the district competitive and provide students what they needed to be successful,” he said.“We were given opportunities to talk with everyone from an engineer to a teacher on certain projects.
One of the most contentious items presented to them was the possibility of building a seventh high school on the 150-acres that the district has already purchased along West Lake Houston Parkway. The committee carefully considered the demographic analysis and felt like the immediate need was for Middle School 11.
