Police released 49 pages of reports, as well as audio, video, and call logs related to the controversial death of Mario Gonzalez.

ALAMEDA — In the hours after Alameda resident Mario Gonzalez died after being pinned to the ground by three officers — in what was later ruled a homicide — investigators went to great lengths to learn if he’d stolen liquor bottles found in his possession.

Many documents have yet to be released amid an ongoing outside probe commissioned by the city. The unreleased documents are believed to include more details of the investigation into how Gonzalez died after being restrained by officers and whether any policies were broken in the process.

While the officers’ investigation into the stolen alcohol was going on, other officers examined Gonzalez’s body and tried to piece together what led to his death. One investigator noted it appeared to be the result of “excited delirium” — a disputed medical concept that at least three physician groups have rejected as an improper means of writing off deaths caused by police violence.

After Gonzalez’s death, police noted that a bottle of Canadian Mist whiskey in his possession had a security cap on it and opened a shoplifting investigation. The man told Leahy that Gonzalez appeared to be “trying to break free” after officers arrived and pinned him to the ground, adding that he didn’t think officers got on Gonzalez’s neck. The man twice reiterated that Gonzalez was “resisting” officers.
