Cody Thomas, a 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers draft pick, picked up his first big league hit Thursday as the Oakland A’s faced the Washington Nationals
Left-handed starting pitcher Ken Waldichuk wasn’t the only Oakland A’s player to make his Major League debut Thursday at Nationals Park.
Thomas, who came to the A’s in a Feb. 2021 trade with the Dodgers, hit 18 home runs with a 1.028 OPS in 59 games in Las Vegas last year before his Achilles issues began to crop up. Thomas then had surgery on his right Achilles tendon in February of this year. “He’s worked tremendously hard this year to get back on the field from his Achilles injury,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said of Thomas before Thursday’s game. “That really was unfortunate end of the season and with the lockout, the inability to get him in and get treatment and take care of it, it impacted the start of this year and all the way until now.
Thomas, at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, was a two-sport athlete at Oklahoma, playing quarterback on the Sooners football team for two seasons. He was a freshman in 2014 and backed up future Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield in 2015, before he went to baseball full-time in 2016.
