Under the revised proposal, San Antonio's mayor would earn $95,000 a year — a charter change that would require voter approval.
After hearing from dozens of residents who blasted their generous preliminary pay proposal for the mayor and City Council, the Charter Review Commission has settled on a little less for the elected officials. The commission’s latest recommendation would set the 10 council members’ annual salary at $80,000, and the mayor’s pay at $95,000. Currently, council members earn $45,722 while the mayor takes home $61,725. “This is a modest change,” said commission co-chair David Zammiello .

The revised recommendation was based on the San Antonio region’s median income for “management and professional occupations,” which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks. That figure was $81,763 in 2023, which is higher than the city’s median income of less than $60,000.
