Dundee Airport saw passenger growth exceed 2019 levels while Southend endured a dramatic drop in flights
withdrew its services from Southend in August 2021 as a result of the pandemic; the airport says it is in discussions with other airlines to increase its routes. Many have moved to Essex’s key airport, Stansted, which not only saw minimal disruption over the summer, but fared best of London’s airports, with departures down just 8 per cent.
Of the UK’s two busiest airports – Heathrow and Gatwick – the latter reported a stronger recovery thanks to its focus on the leisure market, with an 11 per cent shortfall compared to 2019. Britain’s busiest airport Heathrow, was down 19 per cent. Bournemouth and Bristol also fared well, with flights down 3 per cent and 4 per cent respectively, while at the other end of the scale Norwich and Cardiff saw a 56 per cent and 52 per cent shortfall., with Stansted’s departures at 97 per cent of 2019 levels and Gatwick’s down six per cent compared to October 2019; Heathrow recorded the greatest number of departures, which reached close to 17,030 flights.
