Afghans who live in drought-hit rural areas need immediate financial assistance as winter draws near, warns UN

Displaced Afghans distribute food donations at an internally displaced persons camp in Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, Sept. 13, 2021.

Rein Paulsen, director of the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Office of Emergencies and Resilience, said that 70 percent of Afghans live in rural areas and there is a severe drought affecting 7.3 million Afghans in 25 of the country’s 34 provinces. These vulnerable rural communities have also been hit by the pandemic, he said.

Agriculture is “indispensable” to the Afghan population as it accounts for just over 25 percent of the country's GDP, and directly employs some 45 percent of the work force, “and most importantly it provides livelihood benefits for fully 80% of the Afghan population," he said.
