Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice want housing protections for survivors and funding for mental health services to help them recover from trauma as well as helping incarcerated individuals complete their education and gain job credentials to break the cycle of crime.
Nearly 100 crime survivors gathered outside the state Capitol to push for policies aimed at creating stability and safety in crime survivors’ lives and policies to rehabilitate incarcerated individuals.
“Our criminal justice system often prioritizes the defendant, leaving the victim as an afterthought,” said Rep. Natalie Mihalek, R-Allegheny and Washington counties. “It’s a defendant-first victim last mindset, and that needs to change.” Survivors of crimes such as domestic abuse often struggle to find safe housing, and often have to break leases and leave their community.
Jennings said that most prisoners will get out of jail eventually, and they need incentives to become community members who will make a difference upon their release.
