Three heat-related illnesses of concern are heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Heat is no stranger to Alabamians, and days hotter than 90 degrees require more than sunscreen.
“People need to be aware of heat-related illnesses. It’s going to feel much different in a few days than it does today,” said Dr. Wes Stubblefield with the Alabama Department of Public Health.“The symptoms are essentially they look and feel terrible. They pass out. Their skin is hot and dry. And that requires 911, requires a medical emergency,” said Stubblefield.Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.Wear sunscreen. Your skin can burn even when it’s cloudy outside.
While it’s important that everyone stays safe outside, certain groups of people are more prone to heat illnesses. “Older individuals and young children are ones that we think of, but remember there are people that work outdoors, and that can’t be helped. There are people that are pregnant and they are at higher risk,” said Stubblefield.and get the latest local news and breaking alerts in your email!
