Expanding pharmacy and other services and, perhaps, more privately provided surgeries could be game\u002Dchangers. But the approach is ad hoc.

In response to the FAO report, Hannah Jensen, a spokesperson for Health Minister Sylvia Jones, acknowledges that “the status quo in health care is no longer acceptable,” pointing, among other things, toprivate surgeries and the expansion of services pharmacists can offer. But that is precisely part of the problem.

Take privately provided surgeries. The government left it to The Ottawa Hospital to try it out and see what happens, instead of taking ownership, setting clear rules and parameters, explaining clearly why we need this, and pitching it to Ontarians. No wonder the idea is mired in controversy. I went to my pharmacist to ask about the new government plan to expand pharmacy services and was told they are waiting for more information to assess whether they’ll need more staff and space.
