The wild comedy about a demonic hand puppet that takes over his puppeteer's life was last presented locally at San Diego Repertory Theatre in 2017
Both Adam Daniel and Samantha Ginn, co-stars in Roustabouts Theatre Company’s production of the “R-rated” play “Hand to God,” have puppet experience. Daniel, who’s playing teenage Jason and his satanic sock puppet Tyrone, has been a longtime puppeteer. Ginn, playing Jason’s teenage love interest Jessica and her sex-starved puppet Jolene, learned the art of “object puppetry” — any found object could be turned into a character — while a college student at Sonoma State University.
” Ginn saw “Hand to God” during its Broadway debut in 2015 and remembered it as “one of the funniest things I’d ever seen. I was like ‘I want to be in that one day.’ I never laughed so hard at the theater.” While “Hand to God” is outrageous and profane and, puppet-wise, sexually explicit, the play has a serious undertone. “Beneath that,” Ginn said, “we’re seeing characters not knowing how to handle a death. We’re watching them going through stages of grief and not knowing how to ask for help.
