Not only is Ashley Padelt-Robinson a distant relative of the civil rights activist, she can relate to some of the discrimination Desmond experienced as a Black woman in Nova Scotia.

The judge, who Padelt-Robinson described as an older white male, ruled against her request stating that she was"selfish" for wanting to move with her children to a more urban area. Although the judge ruled against her application, through her divorce proceedings Padelt-Robinson and her ex-husband came to an agreement, thus allowing her to move to Sydney.

When Scott learned Desmond's story about seven years ago and her interest led to her wanting to know more about her. As she did, she also learned how Desmond's life isn't well known in Canada — even though she is an important part of the country's civil rights history. "Somebody told me I was being trendy," said Scott, who also writes for television and credits include"Murdoch Mysteries." "I thought … I see this as a possible hit."
