ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Accused murderer Ibrahim Al Ahmad returned to court in St. John’s Friday afternoon, where his lawyer requested a publication ban on details of some of the charges against him.

Al Ahmad, 36, appeared in provincial court by video from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary, where he has been in custody since he was arrested March 5 and charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder for the death of a St. John’s mother of five. Her body had been found by police earlier that day in an abandoned home in Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove.

Al Ahmad’s lawyer, Jason Edwards, told the court he had received some of the disclosure in the case but was awaiting more. A “substantive amount” is expected to arrive from police by the middle of May, the court heard. The court spent time Friday dealing with an application from the defence for a second publication ban on certain evidence related to the case. There is already a ban protecting the woman’s identity in connection with charges laid against Al Ahmad in the month before her death.

Five weeks before he allegedly murdered the woman, Al Ahmad was released on bail with 12 charges of violence against her and others, including multiple counts of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, causing bodily harm by choking, assault, and forcible confinement. He is still facing those charges. The court had also granted Al Ahmad bail on charges of assault with a weapon and uttering threats against the woman last December.

Edwards asked the court to impose a publication ban on the evidence presented at Al Ahmad’s January bail hearing and all evidence in the case presented in court from now until trial, which Judge Paul Noble granted. The publication ban will remain in place until Al Ahmad's murder and kidnapping charges are dealt with by the court.
