And they added a particular button on that for LGBTQ+ patients.”The problem, according to Fredericks, is that while an e-visit provides critical access for something quick, like filling a prescription, it cannot replace something that requires understanding and trust, like discussions around gendering-affirming care.
Public discussion around these issues can devolve, at times, into claims of special treatment for different groups.“The real answer is the same for everyone, which is that when marginalized people enter a health-care system, they're entering a system that they understand often stigmatizes them and misunderstands them, and they enter it afraid,” she says.
In workshops with groups like Saint John Energy, the Imperial Theatre, local police or Horizon Health, Darling has seen how much can be gained by educating people. What it comes down to is that people need access to doctors who they can trust and who are able to meet their needs.
