The Academy explains why Will Smith wasn't removed from the Oscars ceremony after slapping Chris Rock: '...the Academy decision makers were seated in various spots in the Dolby Theater and couldn't mobilize to make a decision before he won best actor.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed why it decided not to remove Will Smith from the recent ceremony after he slapped Chris Rock. The assault was captured live during the broadcast and was initiated by Rock making a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith. After approaching Rock and slapping his face, a fuming Smith returned to his seat and shouted at the comedian as he struggled to defend his joke.

The entire incident was one of the single most shocking moments in Oscar history, with a stunned Rock acknowledging as much after being hit by calling the experience the"greatest night in the history of television." Throughout its 94-year history, the Oscars have gained not just a reputation for fashion and glamor, but also for controversy. There have been some very memorable moments as a result – with many captured live during the broadcast.

"Academy leadership strongly considered removing Will Smith from last night's broadcast following the incident. There were immediate discussions but the Academy decision makers were seated in various spots in the Dolby Theater and couldn't mobilize to make a decision before he won best actor.” 44 minutes passed from the moment that Smith slapped Rock to the moment that the 53-year-old won his first Oscar. It seems like a generous amount of time in which Smith could have been escorted from the theater. At the same time, however, given that Smith was the Best Actor winner, removing him could have created an even bigger issue out of an incident that the Academy was undoubtedly eager to move on from.

With the entire incident still very fresh in the minds of Oscar attendees as well as viewers, it will likely be some time before the story concludes. It’s already been established that no legal action will be taken on the part of Rock, but whether or not the Academy decides to take some form of disciplinary action against Will Smith remains to be seen. It’s unlikely that Smith will face any form of punishment, considering that he’s just taken home the Best Actor Oscar.
