More than 500 people of those evacuees and their pets had registered or were in queue for help at the Edmonton Expo Centre Friday afternoon.
Compounding the disorder, smoke had engulfed the town, making it difficult to see approaching vehicles, Sleno said, adding it took her approximately two hours to leave the town of about 7,000 residents.
Nearly 700 of those evacuees and their pets had registered for help at the Edmonton EXPO Centre by 5 p.m. Some arrived on shuttle buses, while others drove themselves up highways fleeing the chaos, and many more could make their way to the city in the coming days.The City of Edmonton is urging those residents fleeing wildfires to register at the reception centre at 7515-118 Ave., where they will find places to rest and for children to play, as well as food and clothing, hygiene supplies, mental health support and a kennel for pets.
The Edmonton Emergency Response Team got to work soon after midnight. Just before noon, 2,500 kits with cots and other supplies were at the ready, with thousands more available on short notice.Staying with family closer to home, but outside the evacuation area, Sleno said she fled with her seven-year-old son and 94-year-old grandmother as well as three dogs and a cat. But with limited space in the truck, she had to leave her three caged budgies behind.
“My heart goes out to people … If they come down here, they can get the assistance they require, they can get professional help,” Clarke told reporters Friday. “We’re providing support for people for whatever they don’t have. They’re displaced.
