Andrus would have had a player option for next year if he had reached 550 plate appearances this season.
The A’s purging of veteran players from their roster continued Wednesday morning when they released 33-year-old shortstop Elvis Andrus.
“Of course I’m upset. I’m pissed about it. But like I said, the best I can do is stay positive and wait for my turn and be ready whatever happens.” Andrus’ contract contained a club option for 2023 for $15 million. That was never going to be an option the budget-conscious A’s would choose to pick up, even if Andrus’ slash line was much better than the modest .237/.301/.373 numbers he put up this year. However, the complicating issue with the option is it would have turned into a player option if Andrus finished with 550 plate appearances this season.
“I didn’t know that was going to happen this year, being honest, starting the season,” Andrus told the Chronicle. “So it is a little shocking on my side. But like I said, I cannot control outside of my abilities and getting ready for the game. After that is up to the manager and the front office moving forward.”
