As first reported by nikmercer in mid-January, hockey officials under 18 in N.L. are wearing green armbands as part of a new program aimed at curbing the amount of abuse young officials receive.

“The intention is to let everybody know that we've got rookies out there who are young officials who are just doing their job and trying to get better as they go along,” said Hockey NL referee-in-chief Ed Flood. “That’s the intent of the entire program.”'I was excited for what's next': Claire Howie of Paradise first female official to referee St. John’s Junior Hockey League game

Eastern Ontario’s assistant referee-in-chief is Goulds native Sean Tobin and was a great help when they went looking for information. Hockey NL tends to lose about 30 per cent of their first-year officials. Many of them say the abuse they receive isn’t worth the time they’re putting into the game.
