Authorities in Michigan said there was no evidence of exposed hazardous materials from a Norfolk Southern Corp. train that derailed west of Detroit Thursday morning.Local police said the derailment was under investigation and warned residents of road closures in the area. Van Buren Township is located about 30 miles west of Detroit.
More than two dozen of the train’s cars derailed. A spokesman for Norfolk Southern said none of the derailed cars held hazardous materials. The company responds to all derailments, he added.after a train carrying hazardous materials derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, earlier this month, causing a chemical fire and prompting officials to tell thousands of residents to evacuate.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy said one of the overturned cars in Van Buren Township contained agricultural grain and the others were empty. One of the train cars that wasn’t overturned in the derailment contained liquid chlorine, the department said. The Norfolk Southern train derailment in Ohio, which involved around 50 cars, has left residents in the village of nearly 5,000 people
