After 24 years of blogging (and counting), Andrea Tomkins's kids are among the first generation to have their entire lives documented in the era of social media.

Sarah Tomkins might not even remember this, but when she was four years old, she pronounced mayonnaise as “maymaise.”At age eight, she had her first creation on display at the National Gallery of Canada. And at age 11, she was terrified of black widow spiders, but not tarantulas. It’s not something the now 22-year-old graduate student in art history at Queen’s University shares with strangers. Or even friends.

Tomkins took a job with a media company and began her personal “web log”, as they were then known, as a way to share her experience as a young mother. Blogging wasn’t as easy as today’s click-click-post world of smartphones and Instagram. Tomkins shot photos on film, which had to be sent away to be developed. She scanned the photos and then uploaded them using arcane computer code.“It was not an impulse moment. You had a lot of time to think about what photos to use. And it was just one photo. You had to be very selective.”“It was like that old commercial: ‘They told two friends, then they told two friends….’ There was no Facebook.

“Sponsorship — that can be sticky terrain,” she said. “For me, when these opportunities started arising I wanted to make sure it was a good fit for me and the people who are reading. I didn’t want to feel like a shill. My whole identity was built on transparency. I didn’t want to endorse anything I didn’t personally believe in.”FROM 2019: OTTAWA, ON: August 19, 2009 -Andrea Tomkins was one of the best-known “mommy bloggers” in Canada, featured on CBC’s The Current and on CTV.

“Now momfluencers on Instagram are creating the ads through their own self-branding. You can still find momfluencers who share the harder aspects of motherhood, but the industry is much more driven by inspirational and aspirational images of motherhood. It’s much more linked to marketing.”Then there is the risk to privacy and security by putting so much of your life online.

Eventually, she stopped writing about them by name and began to refer to them only as “youngest’ and “eldest.” But removing content is sometimes tricky especially if it’s tied to a sponsorship deal or branded content. “I often compare the situation to child actors. There are laws that protect child actors. Laws that mean their earnings have to go into trust or savings accounts. But that still doesn’t address the issue of consent. There’s a real question about how much a five-year-old can understand,” Petersen said.
