'What my mother didn't yet understand was that she was the one who led me toward activism. This protest was the first step on a path she had built — all I did that day was walk toward my true purpose.'
The first time my mother saw me protesting against government policies was on the nightly news in Columbus, Ohio, where we live.
“Kanyinsola, be careful. Please, this lifestyle is not a game,” she said, fearful that I was jumping straight into activism and organizing that might be over my head. My passion was a result of her lifelong compassion. In 2002, my mother, Adepeju, migrated from Lagos, Nigeria, where my sister and I had been born, to Columbus, Ohio, to reunite with my father, who’d moved to the U.S. My mother knew the process of getting all three of us to America would not be easy, but her resilience allowed us to persist. Once here, she learned how to navigate a new culture through the clientele at her hair salon, new friends, and even changes in her own family.
My mother’s values were illustrated when she traveled home to Nigeria about 10 years ago. She was on a bus on her way back to her mother’s house when a fellow passenger accused her of stealing money, an accusation she denied. As soon as the bus stopped, the local police came to interrogate my mother. It was then, she says, they told her that she would have to pay them to be released.
