Collections now at St. Mary’s University, Truro library
“A few people who didn’t know might walk into that environment and say ‘oh, those Jones’, they’re so messy … they have so much stuff.’ But the dining room table for me, as a little kid, I loved the dining table. The reason I loved the dining room table, there were so much interesting things for a little kid to see, all the pictures, or to read and I loved to read. I read long before I started school.
“As more articles came in, my picture was starting to get shoved underneath, so I would quietly go up to the table, find my picture, and place it on top,” she said, garnering one of the many laughs from the audience Jones elicited during the evening presentation with her rich story-telling ability. Jones said it was early on that she made a point of collecting articles to do with racism and discrimination and not just around the Black communities but also for the Indigenous communities.Originally intending to scrapbook her collection, Jones explained how it quickly became too arduous a task at the time so she kept putting that off while still collecting and preserving her collection in boxes which she made sure were always stored in safe, dry areas.
“When I opened my boxes after so many years I couldn’t believe how much I had collected,” she said. “I actually went to my knees. It was over 15,000 articles in that collection … then I thought, it had been 50 years of collecting.” Jones said the university’s library – Patrick Power Library – has made finding and accessing the collection easy and there is a plan to share parts, especially those which pertain to Truro, with the local library.
