A new competition, Project Hyperion, invites submissions for the design of a crewed interstellar generation ship.
To ensure the crew’s survival across multiple generations, these ships will be equipped with systems for agriculture, habitation, and life support.A generation ship is a hypothetical spacecraft designed for long-term interstellar travel, potentially lasting centuries. The concept involves an initial crew living, reproducing, and dying aboard the ship, with their descendants continuing the journey.
Equipped with agriculture, habitation, and life-support systems, these ships are intended to ensure survival across multiple generations. Instead of focusing on the propulsion system or the ship’s structural design, researchers are specifically interested in determining what the ideal space habitat architecture and social system would be for such a journey, to support the needs of its inhabitants over time.The competition asks teams of at least one architectural designer, one engineer, and one social scientist to design the habitat of a generation ship, emphasizing its architecture and system of societal organization.
