The Department of Justice said in a news release that Cardenas, a 36-year-old Mission resident who was a deputy for the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, informed authorities of bundles of sham cocaine in an effort to allow drug traffickers to escape with the actual drugs. According to the DOJ, the traffickers used less than 2 percent of cocaine in the fake bundles, which Cardenas tipped off authorities to in January 2020 by telling them he had received information on the drug activity from a confidential source. While authorities were distracted by the fake drugs, it allowed the drug traffickers to steal the cocaine from their supply source to distribute it for profit, the DOJ said.
