Wind velocity signatures on radar as the hand-off from one tornado to the next happens. By Matthew Cappucci April 26 at 2:00 PM It was a busy night Wednesday in northwest Louisiana, where at least eight tornadoes touched down and left a damage swath nearly 150 miles long.
Instead, the string of damage resulted from a cyclic supercell. Producing tornadoes over such a lengthy path is somewhat unusual in itself. The storm first showed signs of rotation about 10:45 p.m. Central time in Texas. The National Weather Service in Shreveport, La., issued a tornado warning at 11:01 p.m. for a zone in eastern parts of that state. Over the next three hours and 44 minutes, eight tornado warnings blanketed central and northwest Louisiana as the supercharged supercell barreled through the region.
“To have something like this is atypical, to say the least,” said C.S. Ross, the hydrologist at the Weather Service office in Shreveport. “But for it to occur this late at night into the wee hours of the morning is quite unusual.” The “kink in the line” became a cyclic supercell — characterized by a rotating updraft that reshuffles and reorganizes every 20 to 40 minutes. During the transitional phase, the rotation weakens and sheds its region of concentrated spin northward. All the while, a new, more intense zone of whirling winds develops just to the south. That’s where the next tornado will form.
